Artist Christo and Deputy Chief Curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum George Gurney, look back at the Running Fence, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work which was completed in 1976. The piece consisted of almost 40 miles of fabric supported by 2,050 steel poles erected on the hills of the Sonoma and Marin Counties in California and though nothing remains of the installation, which was in place for a limited 2 week period, the impact of the work would be felt for many years to come. A collection of photographs, drawings, plans and artifacts from the Running Fence is currently on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Interviews by Jean Wainwright.
