East-West Divan

East-West Divan

Exhibiting at the 2009 Venice Biennale, the East-West Divan was organised by Turquoise Mountain, a cultural and heritage organisation based in Afghanistan, and presented works by ten artists from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Curated by Jemima Montagu, the pavillion displayed a variety of disciplines ranging from miniature painting to installation works in an attempt to highlight something other than the stereotypes of terrorisim and extremism the regions it represented are so often associated with.

Frieze Projects 2009

Frieze Projects 2009

A more in depth look at some of the Projects on display at the Frieze art fair this year. Curated by Neville Wakefield and sponsored by Cartier, the Projects this year didn't escape the influence of the global economy with Stephanie Syjuco's Copystand and Filipa Oliveira and Miguel Amado's Impossible Exchange both drawing on the influences of the financial crisis. Cartier Award winner Jordan Wolfson focussed on the complexities of String Theory in Your Napoleon and Kim Coleman and Jenny Hogarth took on an almost voyeuristic role with Players.

The Art Newspaper.tv reports back from the 2009 Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park, London. After a tough year all round there were signs of stronger sales this year and though prices were down overall there was an optimistic mood in the air.

In June 2009, Art Basel opened its doors for the 40th edition of the fair. Brad Pitt was spotted amongst the visitors which numbered 61,000 by the time the doors closed and the continuing economic climate did little to dampen the spirit of this high quality fair.

Pulse 2009

Pulse 2009

With the 2009 Armory Show exhibiting modern works, the door was left open for Pulse to become recognised as the largest US art fair dedicated solely to contemporary pieces.

With 101 exhibitors from 26 countries, the show was a diverse one and though sales were predictably slower than previous years, the fair enjoyed a 35% increase in visitor numbers.
